A selection of sites led by the mayors of Greater Paris

Invent Greater Paris? This is the challenge that 75 municipalities have set out to meet. In July 2016, the mayors proposed 112 sites.
Each proposed site was visited by an elected representative of the metropolitan area, together with all the partner institutions of the call for projects. Each site was analysed in order to ensure control of land-use, a crucial point, since the sites will be transferred to the most innovative project leaders at the outcome of the consultation process. The selection committee finally selected 60 sites to embody the Metropolis: new districts around the Grand Paris Express stations, unique sites in urban centres, on the riverbanks, uncommon built heritage sites, plots of land located in areas undergoing far-reaching change, etc.

Innovation, the heartbeat of the Call for Projects

The great diversity of the sites makes this an international call for creativity, for all types of talent to contribute to designing the new face of the metropolis: architects, urban planners, developers, investors, start-ups and even associations or citizen community organizations. Because we believe the intermingling of different worlds and skills fosters new ideas, the call for projects is committed to “open innovation”. The parties involved will have the freedom to form groups capable of surprising the jury and compete to come up with unprecedented ideas for mixed uses, architecture and urban planning, for cultural and sports offerings, mobility, logistics and digital technology, exemplary environmental practices, social innovation and the participation of citizens.

Selection criteria for the projects

The juries will assess the projects based on common criteria for all the sites, while incorporating each site’s specific conditions.

The Investments for the Future Programme (PIA), a potential co-investor in eligible projects

Any team selected at the outcome of the “Application” phase may request co-investment from the PIA, in order to enable private investors to position themselves on several sites, and potentially alongside several teams, to strengthen the teams’ ability to carry out their ambitious and innovative projects.

The financial support from the Investments for the Future Programme is aimed at increasing the mobilization of all stakeholders in the call for projects. A total of €100 million in capital will be available for the acquisition of stakes in urban innovation projects proposed as part of the Inventing the Metropolis programme.
